How to dry wet clothes so they don't get that musty smell.

To prevent wet clothes from getting a musty smell, you must dry them as quickly as possible and ensure good air circulation. The key is to dry them right after washing and use a fan or dehumidifier to remove moisture.

Now, I'll share some expert tips for drying rain-soaked clothes to keep them fresh and smell-free. These tricks will help you get through the monsoon season without a hitch!

Say Goodbye to Musty Smells: The Magical Way to Dry Wet Clothes

Have you ever had your clothes soaked by a sudden downpour? As much as the dampness bothers you, it's the musty smell that's truly annoying. If you don't dry your clothes properly, they'll reek no matter how well you wash them. The main culprit of this odor is bacteria! They thrive in humid environments and cause that unpleasant smell. Today, I'm sharing the secret to defeating these germs and getting your clothes perfectly fresh and dry.

Step 1: The 'High-Speed Wash' to Nip Bacteria in the Bud

When your clothes get wet from the rain, time is of the essence! The longer they stay damp, the more bacteria will multiply.

  • Wash soiled areas immediately. If your clothes are stained with mud, pre-wash the affected spots before putting them in the machine.

  • Load them into the washing machine as soon as possible. If you wait too long, the smell will get worse and might not come out even after a thorough wash.

  • Use an odor-removing detergent. Using a detergent or fabric softener with enhanced deodorizing properties can effectively combat smells. A small amount of baking soda or vinegar also works well (use a small amount of vinegar only during the final rinse!).

Step 2: The 'Scientific Drying Method' to Blow Away Moisture

Drying is just as crucial as washing. How quickly and effectively you get rid of moisture determines whether the clothes will smell or not!

  • Set the spin cycle to the maximum. Set your washing machine's spin cycle to the highest setting to remove as much water as possible. Less water means a shorter drying time and fewer odors.

  • Hang clothes with plenty of space.

    • Use hangers: Use thick hangers (non-slip hangers are great!) and hang the clothes so there is plenty of space between them. If clothes are bunched up, air can't circulate, and they won't dry properly.

    • Newspaper or dehumidifier: Roll up some newspaper and place it inside the clothes before hanging them. This absorbs moisture and speeds up the drying process. Placing a dehumidifier near the clothes rack is also effective.

    • Hang in a zigzag or arch shape: When hanging clothes on a drying rack, arrange them in a zigzag or arch shape so they don't overlap. This allows for much better air circulation.

  • Ventilate "no matter what." Opening windows to ventilate the room and lower the indoor humidity is the most important thing. Of course, avoid this method if the outdoor humidity is higher.

  • Go all out with fans and dehumidifiers.

    • Fan/Air circulator: Point a fan or air circulator directly at your clothes. The air blowing between the fabric will remove moisture and drastically reduce drying time.

    • Dehumidifier: Placing a dehumidifier near the clothes rack will quickly lower the indoor humidity. Using a dehumidifier and a fan together maximizes the effect!

    • Use a hairdryer (for partial drying): For parts that need to be dried quickly or thick areas (pockets, collars, cuffs, etc.), use the cool setting on a hairdryer. Be careful, as hot air can damage the fabric!

Step 3: The 'Perfect Finish' for Complete Freshness

It's not over when the clothes feel dry! A perfect finish is needed to get truly fresh, clean-smelling clothes.

  • Wait until they are completely dry. The outside may feel dry, but the inside might still be damp. Be sure to check that the inside and thick parts of the clothes are completely dry. If you fold them while they're still damp, the smell will start to creep back.

  • Use a deodorizing spray before putting them away. A light spray of a fabric refresher can capture any lingering odors. Be careful not to spray too much, as it can make the clothes sticky.

  • Manage moisture even in the closet. Placing a dehumidifier in your closet or putting newspaper between your clothes can help manage the moisture inside your closet.

Don't worry about clothes getting a musty smell just because it's the rainy season! If you use the methods I've shared, you can always wear fresh and fragrant clothes. Now, you won't have to fear rainy days anymore, will you?
